Materials & sustainability – how we choose metal at IOAKU

Material & hållbarhet – hur vi väljer metall hos IOAKU

A piece of jewelry should not only look exclusive – it should last over time.

At IOAKU we choose materials based on design, function and use. Form and technology must work together. In our production we mainly work with two materials:

• Brass with plating

• Stainless steel with durable PVD plating

Both serve different purposes in our collections.

Stainless steel with PVD plating – for everyday use

In our new production of rings, we use stainless steel with PVD plating to improve durability. The technology is also used in selected jewelry designed to be worn every day – especially during the summer months.

PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) is an advanced surface treatment where the metal is bonded more strongly to the surface than with traditional plating.

This means that jewelry with PVD:

• Has higher wear resistance

• Are more resistant to moisture

• Preserves color and shine longer

• Does not rust

PVD is a technical choice – for jewelry that will withstand an active life.

Brass with plating – for detail and shape

Brass is a material that allows for more detailed and sculptural shapes. It is adjustable in the metal, making it ideal for rings and designs where fit is important.

Brass provides:

• Deeper finish

• Richer luster

• More detailed shapes

• Flexibility in design

That's why many of our more artistic statement pieces and floral designs are made in brass. The material allows us to create proportions and silhouettes with precision.

The right material for the right design

At IOAKU, material choice is not about better or worse – but about the right material for the right expression. PVD is used where durability and everyday strength are a priority. Brass is used where shape, adjustability and detail are crucial.

It is the balance between technology and aesthetics that defines our design language.

What jewelry is made with PVD?

Several of our rings and selected models in collections such as La Fleur are produced in stainless steel with PVD plating. See each product for material information.

IOAKU's view on sustainable statement jewelry

We design statement jewelry that is meant to be worn – not saved. Whether it’s a brass flower ring or a PVD-plated stainless steel ring, the ambition is the same:

Form with intention. Finish with quality.

FAQ – Materials at IOAKU

Is PVD better than plated brass?
There are different materials for different purposes. PVD provides higher wear resistance and better resistance to moisture, while brass allows for more detailed and adjustable designs.

Is IOAKU's jewelry water resistant?
Stainless steel models with PVD plating are more resistant to moisture than traditionally plated jewelry. Always refer to the product's material description.

Does brass jewelry discolor?
Like all plated jewelry, it is affected by use over time. Storage and care affect the lifespan.
